Een bijzondere nieuwe tafel…

Buying less means you are able to put more money towards what does matter to you. There are a lot of messages coming my way about buying less. But buying less doesn’t really work until you realize you need to be more focused on the quality of what you do buy. Depending on your personality you have tremendous power to influence your immediate environment, make it an environment better suited to you and the further world by the values on which you make your purchases.
Ons huis staat vol met tweedehands spullen. Dit is omdat ik in de winkel vaak niets kan vinden wat de kernwaarden van mijn persoonlijkheid ondersteunt. Wat ik daarmee bedoel is, wat je in de winkel kan kopen is vaak niet duurzaam gemaakt, niet met oog voor de makers of geen van beiden. Dus koop ik liever tweedehands, daar doe ik iemand anders een plezier mee en ik vind dat ik niet verantwoordelijk meer ben voor de manier waarop het geproduceerd is. Er komt geen extra co2 meer bij, en vaak zijn er bij de kringloop mensen aan het werk die dat werk echt wel kunnen gebruiken. Kijk maar eens naar het programma “de kracht van de kringloopwinkel (NPO)” als je dat nog niet gedaan hebt.
My house doesn’t look like a secondhand store even though most of the things there are secondhand. Partly because a lot of the things people sell aren’t old. The items are still for sale new, you can usually find them on the Ikea website. People just discard things quickly.
But also because I have items that took a lot of time or thought to make or buy. I try not to go look for things, to not feel the need for things, as you tend to settle with what you just happen to find. I try to make sure I can fall in love with something, purely because it is beautiful in its own right. We have a new table and I would like to share the story of how we came to buy this particular one with you, because this table makes me feel great every time I walk past it. I wish for everybody to have items in their house that make them feel fantastic about life too.
We hebben een nieuwe tafel in huis waarvan ik je het aankoopverhaal eigenlijk wil vertellen. Ik probeer te zorgen dat ik niet het gevoel krijg dat ik iets nieuws “moet” hebben. Wanneer je namelijk het gevoel hebt dat je iets nieuws moet hebben ga je iets vinden wat op dat moment past bij jouw situatie. Wanneer je zorgt dat je een item echt fantastisch vindt puur door hoe het is en er uit ziet zal het langer bij je blijven passen. Dit soort doordachte, soms wel nieuwe of zelfgemaakte, items in mijn huis zorgen er voor dat het huis er niet uit ziet als een tweedehandse winkel, maar dat de inrichting hier uniek is en speciaal voor ons.
Some time ago I saw a crazy expensive table in a showroom. It had a green marble top in a shape I later learned was called Boat. It looked great, but the legs were chrome, which gave the table a very business like feel. I did get inspired though to see if green marble was the way to go in our new spacious house. In my mind that would look like a fantastic combination together with the secondhand plants I had found…
Ik heb dus een tafel gezien met een marmeren blad, waarvan het ontwerp me niet helemaal beviel. Wat doen consumenten van tegenwoordig dan? Jup, die gaan het internet op! Ik vond een winkel, bizar dichtbij, die tafels customizen. Ofwel, je mag zelf het onderstel kiezen en een tafelblad. Helemaal geintrigeerd zijn wij ernaartoe gegaan!
I found a green marble table-top on the internet in a store that seemed to enable you to customize your table. When we went there the store was quiet (yay, kids can not trouble any other customers!) and we had plenty of time with the salesman. The conversation we had was fantastic!
We konden een groen marmeren tafelblad uitkiezen, in die boot-vorm die wij graag wilden. Met een onderstel dat nog niet in de winkel te zien was, afgewerkt in een witte matte kleur. Oh, het marmer kon ook nog mat afgewerkt worden! Dan lijkt het nu natuurlijk alsof we dan wel klaar zijn met het samenstellen van onze tafel, maar niets is minder waar.
While we were able to get the basics of our table together quickly, the marble tabletop in a perfect finish, legs in a shape that wasn’t even in store yet, with the color I preferred, it didn’t end there.
It turned out the marble table tops were sawed and finished in the back of the store! The salesman took me on a very short tour in the back of the building. They had hidden a miniature factory behind the store. I saw a small truck with the rough slates of marble and natural stone waiting for the first shift on Monday. There were big boxes with metal pipes, turned out they design and make the undercarriage for the tables right there. And big grey machines hidden behind glass windows that would cut and shape the slates of marble into what the customer wanted.
We kwamen er achter dat er een hele werkplaats aan de winkel vast zat. En in die werkplaats kwamen allerlei stukken marmer en ander gesteente binnen. Daar werden ze op maat gezaagd en daarna afgewerkt. Daarnaast, tot mijn plezier, werden daar ook de zelf ontworpen onderstellen en poten gemaakt. Zomaar bij ons om de hoek, dus!
Remember I told you about the table that started this adventure? The shape of the edge of that table was different, it had a sort of round edge and was tapered on the bottom towards the center of the table. That edge, the guy in the store said, was a shark-nose. But they didn’t have that finish in the store yet.
De rand van de tafel die we eerder gezien hadden was op een bepaalde manier afgewerkt die ze shark-nose noemen. Bijna terplekke werd besloten dat de winkel waar we zaten zelf ook een shark-nose afwerking ging bestellen.
Now, I had been searching for the green marble online. It seemed to be coming from India. So I had images in my head from small kids mining in the mountains and stuff like that. Or maybe not mining but at least helping. I still find it difficult to ask a question like that, because I really liked the table. And if I didn’t like the answer it might have meant to have to leave the table for what it was.
Ik had online gezien dat groen marmer vooral uit India komt. En daar had ik niet de beste gevoelens bij. Ik wilde er dus nog achterkomen waar het marmer vandaan kwam dat wij dan zouden krijgen. Maar hoe leuker je iets vindt, hoe moeilijker het is om te vragen waar het vandaan komt omdat het ook kan betekenen dat je die spullen dan moet laten staan! Daar was ik hier dus ook bang voor, ik vond die tafel echt wel tof en door het samenstellen van het ding leek het ook nog of ik echt wat in het ontwerp te zeggen had gehad. Rede te meer om te aarzelen om de vraag te stellen.
So I took a deep breath and asked about the marble, where it was from and how it was made. He flipped open his black phone cover and showed us some group pictures of the rest of the team in front of a big dusty hole in the mountains. He said the team had just been to Barcelona, and the working conditions were fine.
Gelukkig was die man net zelf in Barcelona geweest met de rest van zijn team. Hij had hele mooie fotos die hij geloofwaardig snel op zijn telefoon naar boven kon halen. Mooie fotos van het team voor die stoffige groeve met achter ze ook nog de machines die aan het werk waren.
Now the construction of the undercarriage was also done in in the building at the back of that store, as well as the painting. I know the solid metal bars from which they make the undercarriage were made not too far from the store. The only thing I didn’t ask was where the actual metal came from.
De poten worden ook gemaakt in die winkel. De solide metalen stangen die ze ervoor gebruiken worden een eindje verderop gemaakt. Door het kopen van die tafel stimuleer ik dus ook nog werk in deze omgeving! Wel heb ik niet goed gevraagd waar het metaal vandaan kwam wat ze gebruiken voor de poten, hier heb ik dus nog iets te leren.
Because of the complexity of our requests we had to go back to the store to finalize the sale. At that time the same salesman said he had already sold the shark-nose finish to somebody else too, even though the saw-head wasn’t in the workplace yet. It means that we, in a way, also influenced what is in that store for sale in the future.*
Het tafelblad en de poten zijn met een soort kraantje gebracht, het blad was volgens de bezorgers wel 200 kilo. Het was voor die mannen dus wel even sjouwen om de boel op zijn plek te zetten en verschuiven doe je deze tafel dus niet!
When they brought the table the men who delivered the beauty had to put it in the exact place because it is not easy to change the position of a 200 kilograms table. We have been using this table now for a while and I love it. The surface of the marble is like a space-painting. I keep finding natural flaws in it that wouldn’t be there if it was anything else that a natural stone. The story of what we had to do to get this exact table the way we wanted it is making the table itself even more important.
Ik ben waanzinnig blij met deze tafel. Ik vind het groen marmer fantastisch. Net zo fantastisch als het, toch wel lange, proces van het samenstellen en maken van de tafel. En op het moment is er echt maar een van. Dat blijft waarschijnlijk wel een tijdje zo, omdat ze vanuit de winkel in totaal zoveel verschillende opties hebben dat het bijna onmogelijk is voor iemand om dezefde tafel te bestellen!
*as a side note, you always influence stores with your questions! The more they get the same question the more they understand the urge to relay this message to the head office, or the design team, or the boss, or whoever is in charge. Always ask what is on your mind! Even if they do not relay your message, you might be surprised what different choices stores already have that you do not see when you quickly drop in and out of a store. Most fashion-store owners that I know certainly have an idea about the damage that fashion does and are working to try and make some changes about their policy. Making them talk about it to you makes them realize there are people wanting the better clothes.
