  • Are your clothes and investment or a bother? Do you think it is fun to dress up in the morning? To figure out what you should wear to a certain meeting? Do you have a closet filled with items that you love, that make you smile when you look at them? Your clothes are your second skin. And they are the first thing people see when they meet you. Did you know that when you have an interview in the first 10-30 seconds someone sees you they have already determined if they are going to hire you or not? Your clothes are important because the impression you leave is important. So how do you determine what to wear? How do you determine what you buy? Trends? What is expected of you? Powerdress? Play-it-safe? All those things are forces outside yourself. Prone to change, (fashion, trends) Or prone to misinterpretation (expectations and rules for dressing). What if you could dress up the way you are, inspiring people simply by showing up as who you are? What if I tell you that there is a very easy and absolute fun way to dress yourself? What if you dress yourself AUTHENTICALLY? Not looking at trends, not looking at what you are supposed to wear, but simply looking at what is the best thing for you? It does something super interesting. It makes sure that shopping, dressing up, getting ready to present yourself somewhere, ANYWHERE is fun. If you can dress yourself authentically you don't mind to be seen, you want to take the stage because you know you and your work deserve to be seen. If you want to control what impression you leave on others, from a real and honest place; if you want to make sure they remember you for who you are; if you want the vibes in the room to shift when you enter; than you should consider filling in your email address at my website.   • Standing out is pointless. I mean it. It would mean that you choose vibrant colours instead of denim-blue and pitch-black on a day that feels like a blue day. It would mean that you show some skin when you actually want to cover up. It would mean that you show your face and place another story online pimping (sorry I mean pumping) yourself up because you know that you need to be visible. It is good for business. Standing out and showing up is good for business. So you dress accordingly. You don't? You don't do this? You dress how you want to dress and would never dress according to how you think you should look? hmm ok. What about the length of your skirt and your age? What about flappy upper arms and covering them up? Of that belly-fat and the shape of your pants? What about items that you love but aren't on trend anymore? What about being a certain type and you know that those types shouldn't mess with this or that colour and you try not to, even though you think that top is fun? ... We all have rules in our heads about what we should or shouldn't do. They aren't all apparent because they were written into our system a lifetime ago. They aren't apparent because everybody is doing it unless they are doing the work. If you take out the rules about how you should look, and base everything on how you want to look, everything changes. I love for you to do this because I know you deserve to shine. I know that when you dare to share what you have to say with the world, it will become a better/funnier/more beautiful place. And wearing brown when all it is you want to do is wearing black feels juk. Showing your boobs/scars/pregnant belly on insta doesn't feel right even if everybody that means something is doing that right now. So what is it that you should do? How should you look? What should you show and share? It is hard to get to that core on your own. It is valuable though. Because if you know exactly what you want to share, how you want to look, what you want to give to the world, you can do it without the "yuk". Without holding yourself back.   • Does self-expression need to be extravagant? Nope. Course not. If you want to wear black all day and every day than you should go for it. Or 100 shades of grey. It is about choosing what you like. And it doesn't stop at clothing. Self-expression is about everything that you do & send out into the world. But it is not about what the other one sees. It is not; I need them to think this so I will put that out into the world... (like powerdressing, wearing a suit that shows you are up for the job that is one up the ladder from your current job). It is a creative expression of yourself on every level, while not caring about what others think. About letting go of the expectation that others will reply, respond or relate to what you have to say/do. It is about showing who you are with zero expectation from the receiving end. Letting loose what you think others might feel about what you have to say (look, feel, do, the whole shebang) will make sure that you start to communicate authentically. In order to self-express authentically you cannot simply appear strong, and let whatever it is eat you from inside. You have to have dealt with these things. With limiting beliefs about yourself. With negative thinking in the mirror, with waiting for tomorrow, with accepting the status quo as if it is for you too... If you want to show who you are, so you can get your message across, you have to be who you say you are. That way it is easy for you to show your face and your work. If you want to get you message out to those who resonate with you or need you, you need to be able to carry the attention that comes with standing up for what you believe in.   • How important are the stories of your clothes? The vibe you are in, the reason you buy your clothes, is important. That is what hits you when you open the doors of your closet when you pick what you want to wear for the day. It is the determining factor if you feel happy with what you wear, or if it feeds the feeling of "I have nothing to wear"... It is a reflection of how you felt and the reasons you bought something in the first place. It is hard to make sure you buy things for the right reason because of dopamine (among other things). What you feel when you buy something is a rush. It is a chemical reaction in your brain. (shopaholic is a thing, baby!) And it wears off. It won't take long and that new t-shirt is just a t-shirt. Unless.... Unless there is a story to it that makes you feel great. A personal story. Like; my grandma used to wear this; it is a Fairtrade item; I bought it when I was on vacation or; like this pants; it is made by pants that were given to me by friends. The story of this pants is like this; I chopped them up and stitched them back together (No, not the friends; the pants they gave me.) in my most favorite pants-shape. The shape I upcycled these in were based on a pants call the Jazz-pants, which I love. (No, not Jazz, the shape of the pants) You can imagine a pants like this takes time to make. Knowing in advance I would love the shape meant I was more certain that I would love it when it would be finished. (the pants, not the oh nevermind) It is a unique item that nobody on the whole planet has and before I made it was in fact a figment of my imagination for a while...   • He you! Are you tired? Are you busy working your day job, only to find yourself hidden in your couch all evening, reluctantly getting up in order to cook for yourself? Or are you looking forward to that moment when the kids are in bed so you an finally have some me-time witch is often you-and-a-pack-of-biscuits? I know you do not really wine about your life, you are blessed and you know it. But wouldn't it be great to add some spark, sometime? Do stuff that you love? This is for the people that do not really know. Or they think they know but they don't actually do it, not yet. Just do SOMETHING. No, I mean; Just DO something! There must be a time in the day where you have 5 minutes actually taking action towards that one thing that (you think) you love to do. 5 min will be 35 in a week, 1820 in a year. Sure, it took Rembrandt a bit longer to paint that big one with the impressive light, so don't expect to create anything for the museum, but start! Working on "something" will teach you if you really want to work on it. How much fun is it really? What are the downsides? When you dream of something you leave out what you can't see. You leave out what you don't like. And skill. Working on it will add skill. You need it. To be better, you know. At it. What you want to do. What do you want to do?   • I want to sit on the floor with you... Rethink your Wardrobe is not a simple way to make sure you smile when you look in the mirror. It is not for people that want to find those lost and hidden jewels in their wardrobe. It is not for people that want to navigate fashion better or deal with their low-self-esteem. It is not for someone who is happy with the clothes they wear, and just want to tweak things a little bit. It is not for someone who surfs on dopamine that a newly bought items gives you, ignoring what it will do to them in the future. It is meant to make you more (!) miserable about what the fashion-system is doing to you, our planet and its people, so you can opt-out with your entire heart. Rethink your wardrobe is only for people who are ready to take a step out of the consumer-society that we are in because they realize that it is not making them happier. Rethink is for people that no longer want to hide who they are... People with a mission, people that want to find out what they would look like if they would only listen to themselves. People that are ready to break with old habits and ideas. People that are ready to show to the world who they are on the inside. People that are done with conforming.   • Fear. He was sitting in front of me, with those messy dreads, telling me he knew Vivienne Westwood. He was wearing an old shirt and an even more meaningless sweater while telling me she was his role model. I was surprised. And swearing to myself. F*ck me I did it again. I had been judgmental on somebodies appearance again. Looking at him I had never guessed that he knew much about fashion, and I knew now that the designer I looked up to the most for self-expression was also his role-model? I didn't have to explain who she was and is, he told me. It was clear he wasn't too comfortable about what he was wearing. So I asked him; What do you want to wear? After I got my answer, I asked him another one. Why don't you? There were two reasons. One, society wouldn't appreciate him anymore. (He used the word puke...) This surprised me massively. HE ALREADY LOOKED LIKE HE DIDN'T GIVE A SHIT. He already dressed in a way that loads of people would pull up an eyebrow for. He is one those that wants to get away from modern society as much a possible and he is taking steps to make this possible as we speak. You would think that looking the part would be a done deal for him. Second, he was worried that if he would start to look like he wanted to look, he might become arrogant. Our conversation was cut short at that moment, but I cannot help thinking that he might be afraid of his own power. That he is so used to feeling insignificant and not-good-enough that he is afraid to let that feeling go. When you have lived your life feeling unworthy it is sometimes like a comfortable blanket. He might mix-up confidence with arrogance. He is not the only one. It isn't the first time that I have heard people commenting that it is arrogant to feel for example that there is nothing wrong with your body. So what happens if you feel there is something wrong with you? How you look, how you live or who you are? You are holding yourself back. You are making yourself smaller than you are.   • Fashion is creativities knock-out punch. Oh my dear, what are you saying, Marjolein?? Oh yeah. It is. Cause all you need to do is to know the rules and apply them accordingly. And if you don't know how to do this? You ask in store, find a magazine, a stylist or any other kind of pro who has studied fashion and knows what is best for you. They see you and instantly know what is best for you. They can help you to find colours and styles that work best for you, to make sure that you look fashionable. Fashionable. A changing concept where ideas about what can and should be worn change constantly. A daily changing set of rules. Something you can be wrong about. A societies expressions-average. An average that is said to be a goal. Something to achieve only if you do it right. If you are really good. At what? Picking up the rules. And following them. Creativity is only allowed within those boundaries; only within those rules. Not very creative. Is it fun? Is it fun for you to experience fashion in this way? Lucky for me and you most professionals that I talk to nowadays are trying to make this more about the individual. They take into account how you feel about the colours you are supposed to wear, and if you say powder pink is not for you, they will respect that. If you really hate wearing whatever kind of jeans that really show those nice shaped hips of yours, they will respect that. If you are ready, though, to reinvent yourself from the core, "Rethink your wardrobe" might be the next step. If you want to build up your visual personality, loose from trends, free from external rules, I love to talk to you. It is only for people that have the desire to have "all eyes on us", to be seen with their work and their lives. For people that have a story to tell, a dream to accomplish or, at the very least, are done with conforming.
